Can be described succinctly with one word that starts and ends with 's' and contains the letters 'uck' inbetween. I have used many operating systems, many software packages, and many applications; they still suck. Whether Microsoft, Linux, Apple, name your fanboy OS/app here, they suck. They crash, they fail, they don't work, they require the user to waste untold hours admining their box.
If software and digital computing did not give so many productivity gains in their current poor and unreliable state they would be written off as an obnoxious overhead.
Even the big websites that seem to have 24/7 uptimes usually have their machines running on crons that up and down applications nightly or weekly to keep them running without undue degredation. The JVM and Tomcat is notorious for requiring this type of preventative maintenance.
The focus of my current ire is eclipse. I am currently running it on a Mac Pro as my development environment after switching from Linux and it is failing it. I have a tonne of work to do and all I am getting is beachballs. I am resorting to doing work in emacs as a backup. Meh.
