Since moving to Phoenix I decided to simplify life to an extent, I ditched the TV and for the most part was too busy to keep up to date the news cycle courtesy of work, new city, outdoor activities and making new friends. After
reading Gary and
Lyn's critiques of op-eds my interest was piqued and I loaded the SMH website for the first time in probably eight months.
What rubbish.
The headlines were; Corby's lawyers describe her as ungrateful; Australian Islamic followers want multiple wives; pretty blonde dead girl found buried in bush; two wankers fight high prices; thorpedo sues over drug story. Talk about leave no troll unturned.
It will probably be another eight months before I reload the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald. News ain't what it used to be. I may be remembering some mythical past, but I cannot recall the SMH being that trashy and tabloidy when I was in Australia. I suspect news as it once was is no longer viable as a commercial medium consequently it will be other media forms which supply that style of news and objective discourse.
